What to do with Candy Canes

I was sitting down at Panera bread on Friday night, having some soup, when I found a discarded current issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

I like a lot of BH&G's food images - lots of pretty, natural light in them, which I adore.

In the magazine is the most beautiful candy cane trifle.

I had bought a few boxes of candy canes earlier. It was meant to be. I used a box mix for the brownies, but I made fresh whipped cream. I will admit, I only made two. And I only had one bite. I can't have any ice cream due to diet restrictions. I was more interested really in photographing these beauties. I love the pop of holiday red with the white background and natural window light.

I am currently experimenting with using different types of scrims to diffuse bright sunlight. I taped some plain, white tissue paper to my windows for some of these photos. Inexpensive and it does the job. I think having white backdrop makes the color pop, and a little over-exposure gives them an airy look.

  5. Hi Lara, me again :) How were you able to change your post title color? I've been wanting to do that, but the only way I can see to do it is in the links, but then it does weird things to other parts of my page.

  6. Tricia,

Template Designer -> Advanced -> Links -> Visited Color. I changed my HTML to the "simple template" over the weekend. I'm in the process of clearing up my sidebar and getting everything into the tab links under the header. I hope this helps you out with the color changing you'd like to make. Thanks sweet!

  7. I have decided to declare myself your number one fan. What is better than a beautiful photo of food? That is way cookbooks without lovely pictures should be outlawed. As always, your photos are AMAZING!

  10. Your pictures are wonderful as ever again Lara. Thanks for the tip about the tissue for diffusing bright sunlight. I won't be needing that for a while though I think. I have more a problem with a lack of light in the house to take good pictures for the moment. The kitchen is the place I take pictures cause elsewhere is too dark always, but now, with winter and less sunlight, even the kitchen is much darker.

Did I see that right? Is that snow on one of your pictures? We didn't get any snow so far but soooo much wind, stormy weather really.

    Bye,
    Marian
