Grape Hyacinths

Last weekend I spent some time planting in the front. I always end up making a filthy mess of myself when I garden. I've tried the garden gloves and they just don't work for me.. guess I like to feel the dirt. I planted a bunch of grape hyacinths and some white petunias along the border. Home Depot had the hyacinths on sale for $2 and some change.. not bad. I couldn't help but think of Hyacinth Bucket when I planted them.

The theme for my front flower bed this year is violet, blue and white mainly. I just love the crisp, cool colours together. Lovely. We have russian sage in the far back, tons of provence lavender, oxalis, herbs planted in splotches, and some crazy wild onions that grew when we tossed out some food scraps last winter. We are going to add in some dwarf lilacs bushes and blue and white hydrangeas to the mix this Spring.

This is my 2nd year at this flower bed and we are just getting started. My goal is to make it a very abundent English style garden.. but I'll just call it an Illinois garden because a lot of the English garden flowers don't do well here in IL.

My strawberries are just beginning to come out. My kids are notourious for pulling flowers and veggies.. my tomatoes hardly made it to red last year with them.

  1. You are lucky to have such a nice home(condo, I think you've said)to rent. It looks new. We always gardened at the apartments, townhomes and homes that we've rented. I love lavender and we have always grown tons of it...but last year we had to pull it all out because the mice had made a huge haven in them. This is my first home that I am planting an all white garden in. So pretty. Happy treasure hunting!!!
